A Storied Past

Market Square got its start as exactly what the name suggests: a market. Farmers and vendors sold produce here starting in the 1850s, and the Square grew into downtown Knoxville's central hub for commerce and community life. The surrounding buildings, built between roughly 1870 and 1925, showcase a mix of Classical Revival, Italianate, and vernacular commercial architecture. That historic character is protected today — the Square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Market Square Commercial Historic District, covering about 13 acres in the heart of downtown.

The plaza-style block sits between Wall and Union Avenues, flanked on all sides by those late-19th and early-20th-century storefronts, giving it a distinct, walkable character you won't find anywhere else in the city. Its enduring design and role as a public gathering space earned it recognition as one of the Great Public Spaces in America by the American Planning Association.

Market Square today is anchored by independent restaurants and shops, with patio seating that spills out into the plaza on nice days. Longtime favorites and newer additions alike keep the food scene lively — Ruby Sunshine and Tupelo Honey are popular breakfast and brunch stops right on the Square, while spots like Oliver Royale, Cafe 4, Brass Pearl, and Tomato Head round out the dining options. Just around the corner on Union Avenue, Pete's Restaurant has been serving up classic diner fare since 1986.

Beyond restaurants, the Square is home to retail shops, bars, and a growing number of residential units above the storefronts — part of a decades-long push to keep downtown Knoxville active day and night, not just during business hours.

Year-Round Events

Market Square is arguably best known for what happens in it. Highlights include:

• The Market Square Farmers' Market — running Wednesdays and Saturdays from May through November, featuring local farmers and producers.
• Concerts on the Square — free outdoor concerts featuring jazz on Tuesday evenings through the summer, plus a variety of genres on select Third Thursdays.

There are no permanent chairs on the Square, so regulars know to bring a lawn chair or blanket for concerts and events — or simply grab a table at one of the surrounding restaurant patios for a front-row seat.

Getting There

Market Square sits right in the middle of downtown, making it easy to reach on foot, by trolley, or by car. The downtown trolley line runs about a block away, and several city-owned parking garages — including one directly under the Square — serve visitors, with free parking available in city garages after 6 p.m.
